It is funny that she remembers now that this is her favourite wine as I am sure that I introduced this to her when we were in Portugal last year, but I know better than to argue with Mrs B! Even so I have to say I do agree with her that this is a great white wine and one that offers fantastic value on our list.
Herdade do Esporão is set in the heart of the Alentejo region . It is one of the oldest estates in Portugal and dates back to 1267 and arguably produces some of the finest wines from this country.
Jancis Robinson was quoted on this wine as saying:- ”Full-bodied, oaked, perfumed whites from Portugal are not ten a penny. The highly unusual Esporão Reserva Blanco Alentejo tastes more like a Rhône blend from the South of France than a typical Portuguese white, but I suspect it would cost quite a bit more if it came from France instead of from Southern Portugal in the heart of cork-growing country!”
Mrs B was quoted as saying:- “This is lovely can we have some more at home please.”
Either quote I think is just as apt as this is really a fantastic wine that drinks really well with white meat and fish and shellfish. It is quite a big wine at 14%, so probably not best at lunch but give it a go the next time you are in the Olive Tree.
